An extension of the life span of three widely-used VME boards takes the guaranteed production life of the oldest to at least 14 years. Emerson Network Power, a business of Emerson and the global leader in enabling Business-Critical Continuity™, today underlined its commitment to VME technology, in an industry where embedded board manufacturers routinely support their products for seven years in production.

The three VME processor boards from Emerson Network Power – the MVME5500, introduced in 2002, the MVME6100 (2004) and MVME3100 (2006) – are used in industrial automation, medical imaging, military and other applications. Emerson Network Power is guaranteeing production availability of all three boards, which feature Power Architecture processors from Freescale Semiconductor, until at least 2016 and has the capability to extend the life span even further depending on customer demand.

The new commitment to an extended product life span follows a re-design which has replaced certain obsolete components with newer, functionally-equivalent parts. The board respin is transparent to customers, which need make no change to production tooling to accept the new versions.

Emerson Network Power has also introduced a new variant of the MVME6100, featuring 2GB DDR memory. The original 1GB version continues to be available.

Director of marketing for Embedded Computing at Emerson Network Power, Paul Virgo, said: “Emerson Network Power combines financial stability as a division of Emerson (a Fortune 500 company) with the design and manufacturing infrastructure required to produce embedded boards with life spans longer than ten years. This life span extension of three popular VME boards provides firm proof of Emerson Network Power’s ability to provide long-term production and revision management capability to customers who use our VME standard products.”
