Emerson selected to automate two 1000-MW ultra-supercritical units at China Resources Puqi power plant

Emerson Process Management will install its Ovation™ expert control system at two new 1,000-MW, ultra-supercritical power generating units under construction at the China Resources Puqi power plant. The contract was awarded by China Resources Power Holdings Company Ltd., owner of the plant.

The power plant is located in China’s Hubei province, near the Yangtze River. It currently consists of two 600-MW, coal-fired units that have utilized Ovation technology since they went into service in 2004. The new ultra-supercritical units, which are expected to begin commercial operation in the second half of 2012, will contribute to the region’s economic development and improved grid stability by offsetting megawatts lost when existing hydro-electric power stations are unable to meet demand.

“We were already impressed with Emerson’s Ovation technology, which controls vital processes and equipment at our two existing units,” said Cui Haisheng, I&C manager, China Resources Power Holdings Company Ltd. “This successful experience, combined with the company’s significant expertise automating large ultra-supercritical units, made Emerson the best choice for this project.”

As part of its automation solution at Puqi, Emerson will supply a total of 64 redundant Ovation controllers and 23 workstations. An Ovation system at each unit will perform data acquisition as well as monitor and control the boiler and turbine supplied by Shanghai Electric Group. Unifying boiler and turbine controls provides improved unit stability, responsiveness and thermal efficiencies; tighter overall control of plant operations; and a clearer view of key plant and turbine parameters.

Ovation technology will also manage each unit’s modulating control system, sequence control system, electrical control system, furnace safety supervisory system, feedwater turbine control system and balance-of-plant processes. In addition, Emerson’s Ovation technology will monitor and control systems common to both units using multi-networking technology. In all, the Ovation control systems will manage approximately 26,100 I/O points.

“With this new contract, we are pleased to extend our relationship with China Resources Power Holdings,” said Bob Yeager, president of Emerson’s Power & Water Solutions. “I believe it speaks not only to our industry-leading technology and significant resources in Asia, but also our focus on providing our existing customers with service that is second-to-none.”

Emerson is a global leader in automating large ultra-supercritical and supercritical power generating facilities. Its Ovation system has been selected to automate more than half of the 1,000-MW, ultra-supercritical units in China.
